Firstly, please let me apologise for trespassing in to the Galaxy domain, I am uaually a contributor within the Citroen pages, but have a problem in the wife's car, and was hoping someone here might be able to shed some light.

I noticed this morning that when the ignition is off the light on the radio (the display is iluminated when the radio is off) stays on even when the ignition is off, and the car locked. I think that this could be what is causing the problems starting it in the morning, and wondered if anyone knows if this light should be on a timer (I think so) and if so, where it is and how easy it is to replace. There is an erie purple light in the dash now, even when the car has been parked for some while, and the LCD display on the dash stays visible.

Please let me know if anyone has any ideas or offers. Thanks again,

Mav

I drive a VW, and they all speak to me. I just like to feel smug with my Audi engine

When I went to install my radio, I had the problem of the radio working with the ignition turned off, but never keeping the channel memory when turned off.

It turns out that Ford/VAG/Seat (whichever of the 3 we'll blame this one on) have the switched power and the unswitched memory power reversed.

So, although there is a standard connector for car stereo systems, someone has to change it.

Reminds me of when I went to put a radio in a mates Pug, went to an ICE dealer to get an adaptor, they wanted more than she had paid for the car!!

In both instances, electrical connector (choc) Blok and cutters did the job

The radio is the bog standard VW fit. Anyone out there got any idea where the timing circuit is, or got a circuit diagram and a map of the car?

Thx,

Mav

OK, I have finally admitted defeat, and it is booked into my local corral, I mean VW dealer for them to look into the problem. They reckon it is a min of 1 hour just to investigate.

I will let you know what they think.

You can buy the leads with blocks on them eg at Halfords - 2 choccie block bits later and all should be sorted for much less than the cost of one hour at the dealer. Try an in-car audio specialist if it's not too late.

Original VW radios have a seperate lead in the ISO-connector for illumination that goes with the dash illumination rather than the on/off button of the radio. If you also have problems with the dash illumination you could have a problem with the light swith.

I noticed this when i installed my aftermarket unit (Clarion DB348). It was mentioned in the installation guide. Even the fact that you have to switch the switched power and the unswitched power was in the installation guide. It only mentioned VW and Audi so i guess this time Ford is not to blame

You can see this if you drive with lights on and radio off the buttons of the radio should be illuminated, but not the display on the radio.

Yes but that depends on the radio. Some radios switch on their illumination, even when off, once the "ignition live" is activated.

Quick update - The garage took the radio out, shook it, and has determined that there is a fault. It is working at the moment, but not fixable. It is the standard Sharan casette player, but according to the dealer these are

Try the pub at the local hospital, or wherever the local drug addicts hang out.
